Affiliate programs or associate/partner programs as many refer to them, are programs that allow you to make money off your web site without the need to sell anything. Even though you are promoting someone else's products, your site can still get a great deal of promotion.

Some companies that host such programs,  sometimes mention (in their web site) member sites that are doing a good job at promoting their products, this in turn means that a great number of people may see your site's name.

Another way affiliate programs help promote your site is that by offering products in your site, you are giving people another reason to visit your site again, this can also result in positive word of mouth which in the end can help boost your site's traffic. Just remember this: Never underestimate word of mouth.
