Things change. What was once the perfect way to make money on the
web is no longer perfect. Many dot-coms have come and gone, competition
among web sites is fierce and Internet advertising is rapidly declining.
All this proves without a doubt that the Web is still a wild place.
In light of recent earnings warnings - such as Yahoo's warning
that its ad revenues are taking a nose dive, many have come to the
conclusion that online advertising is no longer effective and therefore
many more dot-coms can be expected to go out of business since most
of them pretty much rely on Ad revenue to stay alive.
Though it may be true that many dot-coms will go out of business
for this very reason, saying that advertising on the Web is no longer
effective isn't quite accurate. Yes, it maybe true that Internet
ads generate low click-throughs - about 1% - but that doesn't necessarily
mean that they are ineffective. Still, neither online advertisers
nor web sites are leaving anything to chance. Both have started
to implement new standards for online ads.
New standards
The Internet Advertising Bureau
recently agreed
to seven new formats for Online Ads. These new formats are a whole
lot bigger than their predecessors - the banner and the button.
According to industry experts, these new super-sized ads will give
Online advertising a much needed boost. Many traditional advertisers
have already expressed much interest in the new standard. Experts
also say that these new formats will allow advertisers to be more
creative when it comes to communicating a message to a target audience.
Although bigger, more intrusive ads may not be better for you and
me, their success may be the only thing that stands between free
content and pay-per-content. In the end, aren't annoying ads a small
price to pay for free content?
Here are the new standards
