Before continuing, remember that creating a logo for a web site
is a process that requires time, patience, and creativity. Now,
here's a few tips.
Sketch it
You'd be surprised how many people skip this important step when
designing a logo. If you sketch your logo idea in plain paper, you'll
not only save yourself hours of eye strain from looking at your
computer screen but you'll also have enough flexibility to make
changes in the way your logo looks should you dislike the results
you get.
Once you are done with the sketch, boot your system up, launch
that graphics program, and start creating the image.
Do not use Animation
Here is one reason why you shouldn't use animation in your web
site's logo.
One time, I saw an image logo that had both fixed text and an
animated background. Though the logo was nice, it had a major
flaw. The animated background was fighting with the fixed text
for the viewer's attention. Attention that should have been given
to the fixed text since it spelled out the name of the web site.
Animated logos tend to divert your visitor's attention from what's
really important, and that is the message you are trying to send
through your logo (the message could be your web site's name).
If you choose to use animation in your logo, make sure that such
animation is not intrusive.
