Knowing how to create an image file is a must for every web builder
and though this may seem too basic for some, it is not for others,
that's why I'll go ahead and show you how to create an image with
your own graphics editor.
The logic behind creating images in any graphics editor is just
about the same - I'll be using Adobe PhotoShop for this exercise,
you can use your own graphics editor. Go ahead and fire up your
Graphics Editor.
Most of the time, the first thing that every graphics editor will
ask you when launched, is to open or create a new image. If this
is what your editor is asking you, go ahead and select Create
image/New image, or New (depending on the option your
editor provides you with). If you do not see this option, simply
go to File and select New (new image). In PhotoShop
you get something like this after selecting New from the
File menu.

To save an image simply go to File>Save or File>Save
As. Some editors will allow you to directly save an image as
.gif, .jpeg, .bmp, etc., others will only give you the option to
save your image with their default extension - in PhotoShop's case:
.PSD, .PDD. Now, go ahead and practice some more. In time you'll
see that there really isn't much to it.
