PhotoShop 5.5

Ever wanted to make your text images stand out? Well, PhotoShop allows you to enhance your text images in many ways, one of which we'll be using in this tutorial.

Bevel and Emboss

The Bevel and Emboss effect allows you add various combinations of highlights and shadows to a layer therefore creating beautiful effects such as 3D text. In this tutorial we will learn how to create a 3D like effect that makes text stand out from its background.

We'll start off with a 159x50 pixel image with "Web Builder 101" as text - like the image below. The image can be of any size and the text of course can be anything (it all depends on your needs).

Plain Text

Now, go to Layers>Effects>Bevel and Emboss. Next, follow the steps as indicated bellow.

1 Make sure there is a check mark in the "Apply" box.
2 Select "Exclusion" as Mode and reduce "Opacity" down to 51 or so.
3 Select "Multiply" for Shadow and reduce "Opacity" down to to 23 or so.
4 Select "Emboss" as Style and reduce Depth to "3".

Bevel and Emboss Options

You can play with the options until you are satisfied with the results. If you selected the same options and values I did, you should get something like this.

Bevel - Emboss - Exclude Effects

PhotoShop has many effects you can apply to your text images. Try experimenting with other effects listed under Layer>Effects and see just how flexible and powerful this graphics editor is.
